Perry is a Chicago native who was birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. She did not pursue acting as a career until she reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can cause. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. She began acting in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved to New York in search of TV roles. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. Perry was a part of Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was staged in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry starred in nine episodes of ABC's drama The Family. Her father played her character in the ABC show Scandal. In the same year, she played a young character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a younger version. She got the part in an audition that was open despite being a fan of this role.
